What is the difference between a bar stool and a counter stool?
The main difference is the seat height. Counter stools—often also called low bar stools or kitchen stools—are designed for kitchen countertops, islands and counters. These are usually at a height of about 90 to 95 cm. The matching seat height is typically around 60 to 70 cm.
Classic bar stools or bar chairs are taller and suitable for bar tables and bar counters with a height of about 100 to 115 cm. Their seat height is usually around 70 to 85 cm. With height-adjustable bar stools, you can individually adapt the position to different table and counter heights.
What is the right seat height?
For a comfortable seating position, there should be about 25 to 30 cm of space between the seat surface and the underside of the table or counter top. So before choosing, first measure the actual height of your kitchen island, counter or bar.
As a guideline:
-
Kitchen island or counter with a height of 90 to 95 cm: Counter stool with a seat height of about 60 to 70 cm
-
Bar table or bar counter with a height of 100 to 115 cm: Bar stool with a seat height of about 70 to 85 cm
-
Different usage heights: height-adjustable bar stool
Also consider the thickness of the tabletop and any rails or supports mounted underneath. What matters is not just the total height of the counter, but the actual space available for your legs and knees.
Sit comfortably at the kitchen counter and bar
A footrest supports a natural sitting posture and prevents your legs from dangling freely. For longer sitting, we recommend padded bar stools with backrests. Armrests add extra comfort, but require more space and should fit easily under or beside the counter top.
Allow enough room for movement per seat. Especially with wide bar chairs with armrests, there should be enough space between each stool. Swivel models make it easier to sit down and get up, while a sturdy frame and balanced center of gravity ensure a secure stand.
Whether a glamorous bar chair with velvet upholstery, a modern counter stool for the kitchen island or an extravagant designer bar stool for the home bar—discover at Codeso Living unique seating furniture that stylishly combines functionality, comfort and extraordinary Interior Design.
